Weight Watchers: Is It Biblical?

A weight loss plan that promises you can eat whatever you want and still lose weight? Where do I sign up??

If you’ve been around the dieting world for very long, you’ve probably heard of Weight Watchers (now called WW). In fact, it’s been around for so long and is so popular, there’s a good chance you’ve tried it.

And it does look promising! No bad foods or good foods, and no restriction of any one food group. Sounds like a diet made in Heaven, right?

If you aren’t familiar, the WW program is based on a points system that involves tracking your food and staying inside a daily and weekly “budget.” As long as you stick to the budget, you can eat whatever you want.

It sounds so doable and easy! But can a plan like this really work for the long term?

As Christians, we should always ask ourselves if the choice we’re making honors God. Even though it might seem silly to look for God’s will when it comes to food and diet choices, it does matter.

So today, we’re asking: Is Weight Watchers Christian, and does following this diet plan bring you closer to God?

The right diet or eating plan will help you develop the fruit of the Spirit in your life—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. And if following a diet doesn’t grow your faith, it’s probably not right for you.

Does this mean you should avoid Weight Watchers as a Christian? Not necessarily.

Just as we’ve done with the other diets in this series, let’s look closely at the Weight Watchers diet to see if it lines up with God’s commands about how we should eat.

In “Weight Watchers: Is It Biblical?” we discuss:

  • How the Weight Watchers diet plan contributes to the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
  • If you can truly lose weight without following a plan like Weight Watchers.
  • Gleaning good things from the Weight Watchers diet that you can incorporate into your life.
