Break Free from Emotional Eating: How to Kick the Habit for Good
Everything is simpler when you’re a child, including your relationship with food. Children don’t understand that some foods are better for your health than others. They haven’t yet learned to “clean their plate,” even if it means eating past being full.
Tell me if you’ve ever had this experience: You promised to take a child out for ice cream, you’ve probably had this experience and the expected treat is all they talk about for hours, or even days.
They’ll go on and on about their favorite flavor, the best toppings, and what kind of cone they’re going to get. Then when the day arrives, they receive their sweet treat in all its glory.
They’re absolutely thrilled…for all of about four minutes.
After barely putting a dent in the ice cream, they walk away, declaring, “I’m full!” And you’re left with a melting, half-eaten ice cream to finish.
Kids are able to walk away when they’re finished because they haven’t developed an emotional relationship with food. It’s not related to their feelings of happiness. A child hasn’t learned to reward themselves with food, or to turn to food for comfort when they’re sad.
To them, food is just food.
Believe it or not, you once had that kind of relationship with food. But then life kicked in and food became emotional.
Maybe it was how you escaped tension at home as a child. Maybe you felt lonely during your freshman year of college and turned to food for comfort. Or maybe you had a great relationship with food until your first diet.
Whatever happened, your relationship with food changed. And now it’s more than food; it’s a habit.
Great news though: as with all habits, there’s a way to break free from emotional eating!
You can get to the root of your emotional eating, and break this habit for good, with the Lord’s help. We’ll discuss how to do it in this episode.
