Cinnamon Rolls, Kale, and the Holy Spirit: Finding Balance without Guilt

Is it possible the Holy Spirit might lead you to eat a cinnamon roll?

Yes, that sounds like a trick question. But if you’ve ever wrestled with labeling food as “good” or “bad,” you know how quickly guilt can creep in.

You want to eat in a way that honors your body and the Lord, but you’re not sure what that looks like when you’re staring down a donut.

Here’s the truth: God’s Word doesn’t hand us a list of “approved” foods in the New Testament. Instead, it shifts the focus to something far more powerful—the heart behind our choices.

That means eating isn’t just a physical decision. It’s a spiritual one, too.

Not because a cinnamon roll is sinful, but because the why behind it matters.

  • Are you connecting with someone over coffee and sweets?
  • Celebrating a birthday?
  • Listening to your body and honoring its needs?

Balance means taking your wants and marrying them with wisdom—not restriction. It’s recognizing that eating a donut doesn’t make you unhealthy just like eating kale doesn’t make you healthy.

Your wellness is a sum of many things: movement, sleep, relationships, peace… and yes, sometimes cinnamon rolls.

So today, instead of asking, “Is this food good or bad?” try asking, “What would wisdom say?” Let the Holy Spirit lead you—not diet culture.

Because true food freedom comes when we take food off the pedestal and put Jesus back in His rightful place.

If you’ve been feeling stuck between restriction and indulgence, I hope this encourages you to find that sweet spot of balance—where your choices are rooted in peace, not pressure.
