Whew! You did it! For a while there, you weren’t sure if you could, but you did it. You kicked your longest-lasting on-again, off-again relationship—with that forbidden food you just haven’t been able to shake—to the curb. Again.
You stuck every piece of it way down deep in the garbage and walked away with a sense of triumph. You’re so over it this time that you know for sure you’re never buying it again. Your pantry is finally free of it and so are you; it won’t cross your lips again in this lifetime.
For once in this relationship, you feel strong and in control.
Which is why, a few days later, you decide that you can handle having this food in your house again. So back it goes to its old place in your pantry. And things go well…at first. You eat it in controlled portions, feeling sure that your triumph was justified.
But eventually, guilt over breaking your word to banish this food forever rears its head. Eventually, you bury your guilt in that food until, once again, you feel like a failure. Until, once again, you’re clearing every morsel of it out of your house and swearing that you’ll never touch it. Again.
What an exhausting cycle! Which is no wonder since you’re focusing so much of your emotional energy on trying to manage your relationship with this food.
The thing is, you’re relying on your willpower and self-control to keep you on the straight and narrow. But what if you relied on godly wisdom instead?
Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you.
Proverbs 4:5-6 ESV
