“I’ll start again on Monday.”
“It’s almost the start of a new month; I’ll try again then.”
“Healthy eating and weight loss will be my New Year’s Resolution…next year.”
Does any of this sound familiar? You may not have spoken these sentiments out loud but you’ve probably thought them at least once. Or maybe a thousand times.
That, Sis, is the all-or-nothing diet cycle: “If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t do it at all.”
The thing is, even if you eat perfectly for a whole day, chances are you’ll mess up tomorrow for the simple reason that perfection is unattainable.
Start again, mess up, start again.
This vicious cycle means progress is slow, if it comes at all. It’s like watching a hamster on a wheel. He’s giving it all he’s got, running as fast as he can. But when he gets off, he’s in the same cage where he started.
If you’re ready to break free from the diet cycle, I’ve got good news: You don’t need to keep starting again!
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 413-14 (ESV)
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul says it’s time to forget the mistakes of the past. This means you can start now—today, this second!—and move forward to permanent, sustainable lifestyle changes.
You can get off the hamster wheel and break free from the diet cycle when you address the underlying issues keeping you stuck in the same place.
Once you know why you’re struggling, you’ll know how you can move forward without starting over…and over and over again.
