Restrictive diets. You know them. You’ve tried them. You hate them.
But sometimes denying yourself certain foods seems like the only way to get the results you want. Yet eventually, you may start to approach your relationship with food and healthy living in a different way.
Here at Grace Filled Plate, we focus on making food choices that honor God and the different body types and needs He gave us. This is what we call food freedom.
But here’s the thing. When you’re on the cusp of taking the leap into food freedom and intuitive eating, you may have a fear shared by other women who want to take the leap too: Does finding food freedom mean weight gain?
It’s a legitimate fear caused by the diet mentality with which our brains have been programmed for years. This is how eating what we want when we want becomes a recipe for disaster.
You fear you’ll undo all of your progress, which holds you back from making the leap into trusting God and glorifying Him in your food choices.
So much of traditional dieting involves guilt. You restrict your food, still feel hungry, binge on something you “shouldn’t” eat, then wallow in despair that you’ll never get it right.
Rinse and repeat.
But when you start to experience food freedom, suddenly every food is permissible. Now it’s okay to eat the cookie or that bag of pretzels, right?
This is when it’s important to realize, like the Apostle Paul did, that just because you can have it, this doesn’t mean you should.
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV
