What to Do When You Have No Self-Control with Food
Have you ever found yourself sighing, “If I just had more self-control with food, everything would be so much easier”?
Maybe you feel like if you had that one missing piece—iron-clad willpower—you’d finally stick to healthy eating without the constant struggle.
Cheryl, a listener of the Grace Filled Plate podcast, put it so well when she shared her heart: “I need more self-control. I know it’s a Fruit of the Spirit, but I have none when it comes to food.”
If you’ve ever felt that same tug-of-war, you’re in good company.
The Truth About Self-Control
Cheryl’s right—self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…” (temperance being self-control).
And while that seems like a tall list to complete, the fruit of the Spirit is a gift from God. It’s not something we have to muster up on our own. Instead, it’s evidence of God’s Spirit living and working within us.
Yet, when it comes to food, it can feel like that fruit is missing entirely or hit-and-miss, at best. You might even think, “How is it possible I can fast before a medical test, but I crumble at the sight of a dessert table?” Or, “Why do I have self-control when I am around others but, as soon as I am alone, I eat like it’s my last meal?”
It’s puzzling and proof that the struggle is real—and this willpower battle is one many of us have faced.

Why Willpower Isn’t the Answer
Here’s the thing: we often confuse self-control with sheer willpower. We think God wants us to power through the temptation to overeat with white-knuckled determination.
But, that’s not His heart for us at all. Willpower is limited and fragile—it runs out quickly, especially when we’re stressed, tired, overwhelmed, emotional, or hormonal. Sheesh, it’s no wonder why it feels like a fleeting resource!
But, our Perfect Papa knows this too. His grace covers every struggle, even our departure from self-control.
God cares more about the state of our hearts than about whether we flawlessly follow a food plan. Remember the Pharisees? Outwardly, they looked like they had it all together, but their hearts were far from God.
I’ve been there too—pushing my cart around the grocery store, proud of my perfectly healthy selections, but inwardly obsessed with food and feeling anything but free.
All that time, sowing seeds of self-effort that let us down when we need it the most.
The Gift of Growing Fruit
This reminds me of gardening. No matter gifted a gardner, you can’t force a seed to grow. Our role is to plant, water, and nourish the soil—but God brings the growth.
The same is true with self-control. We can’t manufacture it through willpower alone, but we can create an environment where the Holy Spirit’s fruit has room to flourish.
What does that look like? It starts with a simple but powerful prayer: “Lord, I don’t have self-control in this area. But thank You that Your Spirit lives in me. Teach me to walk in Your fruit.”
As we stay connected to Him—through prayer, Scripture, and abiding in His love—He grows that fruit in us, little by little.

Setting Realistic, Grace-Filled Goals
Another key shift? Moving away from rigid food plans. The phrase “healthy food plan” alone can trigger feelings of restriction and rebellion.
If you’ve ever printed a meal plan from Pinterest and felt itchy just looking at it—you’re not alone! Past dietary trauma and failed attempts have led us to believe that we are the problem. But, that’s hardly the case–diets and their unrealistic expectations have set us up for failure!
Instead of trying to overhaul everything at once, focus on small, sustainable changes. Take an honest look at where you are today.
- Are you regularly overeating?
- Do you notice patterns where your choices don’t align with your health goals?
- Is there a situation that triggers overeating?
Without guilt or shame, jot down some gentle observations.
Then prayerfully consider: where might God want you to grow? Not where culture says you should be—but where He is leading you.
And from there, choose just one small step forward.
Maybe it’s…
- Adding an extra serving of veggies
- Pausing before going back for seconds
- Committing to move your body in a joyful way a few times a week
These steps may seem small, but they are powerful. As they become part of your routine, you’ll grow in confidence and freedom. Before long, these healthy habits will start to feel like second nature—and you can build on that strong foundation over time.
You’re Not a Failure
If you’re wrestling with self-control and food, please hear this: you are not a failure. You are not alone.
The Christian life is a journey of transformation, and yes, that often includes wrestling. Philippians 2:12-13 reminds us, “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
Keep taking those small steps. Stay rooted in His Word and His love. Trust that as you lean into Him, He will grow the fruit of self-control—not through striving, but through abiding.
And friend? God’s goal isn’t for you to have perfect eating habits. His goal is for you to be so full and satisfied in Him that food finds its rightful, peaceful place in your life.
One small, grace-filled step at a time—you’ve got this, because He’s got you.
